ROTOSTOP® planetary gearboxes
The ladle tilting gear of the crane cast ladle is a component of particular safety importance. In ladles of more than 500 kg melt volume it has to be self-locking in both tilting directions. Instead of the worm gear used previously, planetary gear train with a crank and planetary gear are already fitted with a load torque stop, so that they were self-locking in both tilt directions.

This ladle tilting gear is known as a ROTOSTOP® oil bath gearbox. The spring-loaded brake system that it is fitted with has proven itself to be effective and safe, so much so that numerous older bull ladles have been retrofitted with it. In the further development of these oil bath gears by ODERMATH the proven spring-loaded brake system has been retained.
The feather key groove joints used previously in almost all gear sizes has been replaced by a spline shaft joint, capable of high loads, for all gears. As a result of this improvement costly repairs to pivot pins and gear components, which were frequently necessary because the feather key groove joint became deformed due to the high load and developed too much play, has become redundant, Moreover, the spline shaft joint made the dismantling and installation of the gears during inspection work much easier. Naturally we can supply you the new gears with feather keys on request.
Compared to previous planetary gears the planetary assembly levels have been improved in that the planetary axles are now supported on both sides and the gear rim is now fastened to the gear housing in such a way that it can be replaced.
Instead of the previously used low-viscosity grease the new gears are filled with synthetic oil that can take high loads, and which can easily be drained off and changed during inspection services. The extensive cleaning work needed to the gear components due to the use of low-viscosity grease is thereby reduced substantially.
The gear unit base that formed part of the gear housing up till now, has been replaced by a base flange, whose measurements can be adapted to such an extent that all previous ROTOSTOP® gearboxes can be replaced with new ones, whereby the gearbox output shaft can also be fitted with feather key groove joints, if no new trunnions with multiple gear teeth has to be installed for the spline shaft joint. Due to the flexibility of the connecting dimensions, these gears can also be attached to ladles that originally were designed for other gears.
As a result of the innovative structural improvements to these gears the safety of this vital ladle component has been improved even more. At the same time it reduces maintenance and inspection costs considerably.

The nullification of the perceived contradiction between the free movements of a planetary gear and the absolutely reliable self-locking, demanded for safety reasons, has made the ROTOSTOP® tilting gearbox famous. Through light, sensitive turning of the hand wheel of the ROTOSTOP® gearbox the highest cast precision for use in ladles with up to 80 tons volume can be achieved.
The new, completely upgraded generation of gears with the sizes 21 to 25 offers you the most modern in gear technology, without having to do without the performance features typical of all ROTOSTOP® gearboxes. Naturally, we would prefer if the ROTOSTOP® gearboxes are attached to original ODERMATH, OR SENSSENBRENNER ladles. Then you have the assurance that the longevity of the gears will not be jeopardised by faulty form and temperature stability, non-aligned pivots and other structural or manufacturing defects. Nevertheless, you do not have to dispense with your old ladle immediately, only because it does not have a ROTOSTOP® gearbox. As a result of the flexible design of the connecting dimensions we can adapt the new ROTOSTOP® gearbox to almost any ladle.
